Study Group Committee Call for Nominations 2007

The BSA Visual Sociology Study Group is calling for nominations for 4 people to take on key roles in the Study Group Committee.

The call for nominations refers to the following committee roles:

We are welcoming joint nominations for posts.

The nominations are open from 2nd September 2007 until 30th October 2007.

To be considered for the position you must write to us at info@visualsociology.org.uk  by 30th October 2007, using the supplied nomination form as well as

  • A one-page CV

All applications must be accompanied by the names and contact details of 2 BSA members who support your application.

The nominations will be considered by the existing Study Group Committee, whose decision will be final.

NB: You must, yourself, be a BSA member to be considered for a Study Group Committee position.

The Visual Sociology Study Group

The Study Group was set up in March 2006 and since then has run a number of events including a visual sociology conference at the University of Warwick and published a statement of ethical practice for visual researchers working in the UK. The membership of the group is diverse and includes academics, students, researchers, photographers and professionals. The current membership stands at 90 and continues to rise.

The primary remit of the Visual Sociology Study Group is:

  • To provide an organizational context in which to bring together academics, researchers and professionals from a number of areas within sociology who have an interest in the visual;
  • To provide a forum to allow for the critical development, building and elaboration of visual sociological theorizing and related discourses;
  • To develop new and refine existing visual sociological methodologies;
  • To develop professional practice protocols for the ethics of visual sociological research; 
  • To create a context in which professional networking and constructive interdisciplinary communication can take place;
  • To seek a professional interaction with the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA); its intellectual explorations and its established hub for visual sociologists 

The study group are aiming to create an interactive strategy and programme of events and resources which are beneficial to the diverse membership of the group. The new committee members will design, organise and implement this new strategy.

BSA Visual Sociology Committee Roles

Described below are the roles in the BSA Visual Sociology Group; all roles are included to give context to the structure of the study group comittee. The roles of Convenor(s), Events and Website & Design have been filled by current committee members. We are taking nominations for all other roles.

Study Group Convenor(s)
Accountable to: The Committee, Study Group Members

Role Purpose: The role of the Convenor is to ensure that the strategic goals and mission statements of the study group are fulfilled through its activities. This includes the responsibility for liaising with the Finance & Membership Officer to ensure that the group remains viable and fulfils its obligations to group members. Additionally, the Convenor will work with the Publicity Officer in representing the BSA Visual Sociology Group to the BSA and other key stakeholders in the field. Lastly, the Convenor will work with the Postgraduate Membership & Liaison Officers to ensure that student innovation is addressed in the working of the study group. Back to top

Events Officer (x2)
Accountable to: Study Group Convenor, Study Group Members

Role Purpose: The role of Events Officer is primarily to identify, coordinate and strategically plan key activities (events) of the BSA Visual Sociology Group; working in conjunction with the study group convenor(s). This will include the responsibility for the organization of conferences, public lectures or training events. The Events Officer will work with the convenor(s) in disseminating responsibility of volunteers during these events. Furthermore the Events Officer will work closely with the Finance & Membership Officer and study group convenor(s) to establish a budget for the events and sources funding; either through sponsorship or raise through attendance. Additionally, the Events Officer will work with the Publicity Officer and convenor (s) to create a communications and publicity strategy for the event. Back to top

Publicity Officer
Accountable to: The Events Officer, Study Group Members, Study Group Convenor

Role Purpose: The role of the Publicity Officer is to work with the study group convenor(s) towards creating and organizing the dissemination strategy of the BSA Visual Sociology Group's activities. In many instances this will be drawing together other Committee Members '  work and disseminating it accordingly. They will work closely with the Website & Design Officer to create information updates to be disseminated to the group. Furthermore they will act as the contact point for group members and ensure that the group are engaging with the information needs of the members. Additionally the Publicity Officer will coordinate the work of the Website & Design Officer to assure content and design is joined-up. Back to top

Website & Design Officer
Accountable to: Publicity Officer, Study Group Members

Role Purpose: To support the Publicity Officer in design work surrounding events and information resources. The role will include the design, maintenance and development of the BSA Visual Sociology Website: www.visualsociology.org.uk . They will work with the Finance & Membership Officer and study group convenor(s) to secure funding for further development on the site. Furthermore, they will support the work of the Publicity Officer and study group convenor(s) in updating the website in respect of upcoming events, the programme schedule, and developments in the field and will be responsible for collecting web-base data on members: i.e. email addresses. Additionally, they will work with the study group convenor towards creating a unique brand for the group, which can be used on all publicity. Back to top

Finance & Membership Officer
Accountable to: Study Group Convenor, Study Group Members

Role Purpose: The Finance & Membership Officer will coordinate, in conjunction with the study group convenor(s) the funds of the BSA Visual Sociology Group. This will include responsibilities for membership fees and sponsorship. The Finance & Membership Officer will have to work closely with the Events Officer to ensure that proposed events are financially viable. Furthermore, the Finance & Membership Officer will work with the Web Manager to secure funds for the development of the website: www.visualsociology.org.uk . The role will also include coordinating the workings of the group and ensuring that correspondence between Committee Members is maintained. Additionally, the Finance & Membership Officer will coordinate Study Group Committee meetings and liaise with the study group convenor(s) and the BSA about the group's activities. Lastly, they will hold all information about members and will work with the Publicity Officer and study group convenor(s) to ensure that all members receive updates about the group's activities. Postgraduate Membership & Liaison (x2)
Accountable to: Study Group Convenor, Study Group Members

Role Purpose: The role of Postgraduate Membership & Liaison is reserved for Postgraduate students and focuses on student innovation in the area of Visual Sociology. The Postgraduate Membership & Liaison, in conjunction with the study group convenor(s) will ensure that student innovation is represented in the programme of the BSA Visual Sociology Group, and will work with the Events Officer to that end. Additionally, the Postgraduate Membership & Liaison will act as a vital contact for student networks and ensure that student innovation is brought to the attention of the Publicity Officer and study group convenor(s).
