The BSA Artwork Competition and Exhibition was initiated by the BSA Conference Organising Committee as part of its programme for the 2008 Conference, titled ‘Social Worlds, Natural Worlds’. We invited undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline to submit artwork (still photographs or videos) addressing the conference theme -- the relation between the social and the natural. Forty-four students submitted work, including 38 students from 21 different universities in the UK as well as students from institutions of higher education in Australia, Austria, Italy, Russia and the United States.
The total prize money of £500 was donated by the Reinvention Centre (University of Warwick and Oxford Brookes University) as part of its support for the integration of student research into the undergraduate curriculum.
Thanks to the judges, Margaret Archer, Elizabeth Chaplin and Ray Pahl; to Carol Wolkowitz, who organized the competition and curated the exhibition; to Lloyd Hill, who compiled the Power Point sequence; and to Terence Heng, for creating the exhibition website. We are also grateful to Tim Davies, Ivor Gabor, Wallace Heim, Shelley Sacks, and Gerard Wilson, for timely advice; to Liz Jackson, Hazel Rice, and Jean Trevis, for their administrative expertise; and to Sarah Beades, Dominic Pasura, and Maud Perrier for other help. Financial support came from the Reinvention Centre (Warwick and Oxford Brookes), the BSA and the Warwick University Sociology Department.
