Consumer Goods
My images represent the limitless capacity for the accumulation of wasteful consumer goods. In fact the limitless capacity of consumerism is only an illusion because in reality it is limited by natural resources and the amount of space we have to keep all the waste. Such disruptions to the environment question how we should understand the relationship between human society and the realm of nature. By focusing my work on waste I hope to challenge the way we are encouraged to not think about refuse; it is collected in bins and sent to a landfill site out of the way. Such challenges to the environment are related to and in turn affect social and cultural practices. I work with consumer goods such as plastic bottles to symbolise the mass production of commodities which can be reused and recycled, yet threaten and clutter our environment. The objects captured have the ability to transcend themselves as the imagery links to wider social issues, commenting upon society and negating the utopian vision of consumerism.
