The British Sociological Association Artwork Competition was organised by the BSA Conference Organising Committee for this years conference, held at the University of Warwick 28-30 March 2008. It received entries from 44 students, from 21 different universities in the UK and five institutions of higher education in other countries (Australia, Austria, Italy, Russia and the United States). The £500 prize money was donated by the Reinvention Centre, in furtherance of its support for the integration of research into the undergraduate curriculum. The winners were announced at the plenary session of the BSA on Sunday 30 March 2008, and the winning entries were then projected onto the large screen at the front of the Arts Centre Theatre. About half the entries were also projected onto a wall of the main conference headquarters throughout the conference. The judges of the competition were Elizabeth Chaplin, author of Sociology and Visual Representation, Professor Margaret Archer and Professor Ray Pahl. The judges decided to divide the prize money of £500 between a first prize of £250 and five Special Commendations of £50 each. First prize was awarded to Piper Hanson, Smith College (USA), for 'Life in the Wake of Katrina'. The Special Commendations, in alphabetical order, were as follows:.
